Sixteen Prescriptions for Overcoming Performance Anxiety

(Adapted from PERFORMANCE ANXIETY by M. Robin)

  1.   De-stress yourself, don’t distress yourself.
  2.   Rehearse a skill, not a symptom.
  3.   Don’t confuse performance anxiety with performance effort.
  4.   Don’t self-medicate.
  5.   Keep things simple.
  6.   Keep your playing in reality not fantasy.
  7.   Tolerate, don’t denigrate.
  8.   Use “why not?” not “why me?”
  9.   Act “as if”, fake it to make it.
  10.   Be a musical participator, not a self-spectator.
  11.   Be process-oriented, not product-oriented.
  12.   Stay in the moment, it is precious.
  13.   Rate your performance not your personality
  14.   Accept yourself and your past failures.
  15.   If you must compare, compare downward as well as upward.
  16.   Give yourself permission to be yourself and enjoy.
