
Professional Profile of Simon Locke
French horn player and Teacher
After leaving the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, Simon was first horn of the Grenadier Guards band for four years, he then transfered to the RAF Central Band where he was principal horn. Simon has worked with many orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Halle Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Ballet and Sadlers Wells Opera. In London’s West End, Simon played in the orchestras for My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Oliver and Phantom of the Opera. Since leaving his full time post with Leicestershire Arts in Education, where he was the specialist horn teacher, Simon pursues a busy freelance playing and teaching career, playing with many different ensembles and regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Concert Orchestra, the Bath Philharmonia, the Queens Park Sinfonia and the English Festival Orchestra. Simon also does demonstration and recital work, details of which can be seen on this site. Simon also has pupils at Foremarke School, Repton School and Leicester University as well as students who have lessons in his purpose-built studio.
Musical Education
Simon started playing the horn at the Royal Grammar School in Worcester. He was then taught by Alfred Cursue at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall and Derek Taylor at the Royal Academy of Music. As well as Bachelor of Arts in Musical Performance, Simon also has a Masters degree in Music.
